DESCRIPTION

The engine has 2 temperature sensors, an intake air temperature sensor (charge air cooler duct side) and an intake air temperature sensor (built into mass air flow meter), to detect the temperature while the engine is operating. A thermistor, whose resistance value varies according to the temperature, is built into each sensor. When the temperature is low, the resistance of the thermistor increases. When the temperature is high, the resistance drops. These variations in resistance are transmitted to the ECM as voltage changes. Based on these signals, the ECM increases the fuel injection volume to improve drivability with a cold engine.

When the following conditions are met
(1) Soaked engine with current engine coolant temperature less than 32°C (89°F) and before soaking engine coolant temperature was more than 78°C (173°F)
(2) When ignition switch is turned to ON, the difference between engine coolant temperature and intake air temperature is less than 6°C (11°F)
(3) Engine coolant temperature, intake air temperature (mass air flow meter) and intake air temperature (charge air cooler duct side) values are stable (rate of change less than 5°C (9°F) per second)
(4) Engine has been started and idles for about 1 minute
The difference between air temperature and changed air temperature is more than 25°C (45°F) when DTC detection pattern is completed

HINT:
To meet the DTC detection conditions, the engine coolant temperature must be more than 78°C (173°F) when the engine is stopped and less than 32°C (89°F) when the engine is next started. Therefore, leave the vehicle for long periods of time after turning the ignition switch off.


INSPECTION PROCEDURE

NOTICE:
When replacing the ECM and/or fuel injector, the ECM needs Registration and Initialization (Click here).

HINT:
Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

1.CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO P011C)

  1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the tester on.

  1. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC.

  1. Read DTCs.

2.READ VALUE USING INTELLIGENT TESTER (INTAKE AIR AND INTAKE AIR TEMP (TURBO))

  1. Stop the engine when the coolant temperature is more than 78°C (173°F).

  1. Leave the vehicle.

    HINT:
    To meet the DTC detection conditions, the engine coolant temperature must drop to below 32°C (89°F).

  1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the tester on.

  1. Start the engine when the engine coolant temperature is less than 32°C (89°F).

  1. Idle the engine for 1 minute or more.

  1. Enter the following menus: Engine and ECT / Data List / Intake Air and Intake Air Temp (Turbo).

  1. Read the value of Intake Air on the tester.

    Standard:
    Difference between the intake air temperature (Intake Air) and actual outside air temperature is within 10°C (18°F) or less.

    HINT:
    Temperature readings on the vehicle outside temperature gauge (if equipped) are not suitable for comparing to the intake air temperature reading. The outside temperature gauge has a significant delay built in to prevent swings in the temperature display. Use an accurate thermometer to determine the outside air temperature.

  1. Read the value of Intake Air Temp (Turbo) on the tester.

    Standard:
    Difference between the intake air temperature (Intake Air Temp (Turbo)) and actual outside air temperature is within 10°C (18°F) or less.

    HINT:
    Temperature readings on the vehicle outside temperature gauge (if equipped) are not suitable for comparing to the intake air temperature reading.
